There’s a scene with Snape and Dumbledore later in the series when one of them conjers up a neon deer and it’s a petronas related to Harry’s mother and I’ve never understood what that’s about, even with several young people trying to explain it to me. Can any of you help me to understand it?

so, the patronus was supposed to be like a reflection of who you are.
Lily Potter (harrys mom) had a doe patronus. Snape loved her so much and changed so drastically for her and from her death (her death was part of the reason he became a double agent) that his patronus had changed form, to, as you saw, a doe.
Also, patronus is in the dictionary. cool.
yes, I am a bit of a Harry potter geek.

Snape wanted to warn Harry and Ron of those darned perilous magical flying deer that the Weasley’s Ford Anglia might have flown into while zipping around high in the clouds at night above Paris or wherever Hogwarts is.
Fixing your classic cars isn’t cheap, even for wizards.

It was an expression of Snape’s love for Harry’s mom. It was so deep that it had an affect on how his patronas was visualized.... serious case of the onesies there.

my wife is halfway through her Harry Potty marathon this weekend... When I saw the movie I kinda figured that deer was sort of a motherly Disney Bambi reference.

Patronuses (patroni?) are occasionally said to change, often with some relation to who you love. In the books, Tonks’ patronus changes to a werewolf after she falls in love with Prof. Lupin, Snape’s patronus changes to Lily’s after she dies, and there’s been some speculation that Ron’s patronus is a Jack Russel Terrier partly in connection to the fact that Hermione’s patronus is an otter (because apparently Jack Russels are known for chasing otters).
How the heck Snape knew to cast it at just that particular place and moment to lead Harry to Gryffindor’s sword, I have no idea (and if he stashed the sword for Harry, why the heck did he put it at the bottom of some magic drowny lake covered with a thick layer of ice?).

That’s about the most cogent commentary I’ve seen to date on the subject. Thank you.
